Here is a quick and yummy recipe for no bake chocolate almond oat energy bites that is packed with protein, fiber and full of tastiness. Perfect snack for the kids when they come home hungry from a long day of school. They’re also dairy, peanut, gluten, wheat and soy FREE!
When we are busy it can be hard to find healthy snacks for our kiddos that they will actually eat. We have done more than our fair share of experimenting with this in our house and let me tell you in case you didn’t know already — kids are picky! I have made more than a few “treats” that went untouched in this house, but the good news is that you will benefit from my mistakes and I will only share my “kid approved” heart healthy kids’ snacks!
The incidence of heart disease in America is a serious issue and it is starting younger and younger. Our kids are eating less whole grains, fruits and veggies and eating more processed meats and bakery snacks.
So what makes a snack heart-healthy? Simply put, anything that is low in fat, sugar, and sodium. Fats and sugars contribute to obesity and high cholesterol and salt increases blood pressure. Once you start reading labels, the more you see that fat, sugars and sodium is out of control.
Educate your kids and encourage them to get creative with whole grains, fruits and veggies and you just might be surprised at what they will come up with! Like this picture — my daughter drew this after we talked about heart health (it was going to be fighting bacon!).
